| Jodie was at work on July 31 when she got the emergency call. It was her 16-year-old daughter, Riki, and she said the garage was on fire.
“My husband, Rich, and I talked to our kids all the time about what you should do in case of fire,” recalls Jodie. “We went over escape routes a million times. But I couldn’t wait to get there and touch my children’s faces to be sure they were okay.”
Back at the house, Jodie’s daughter, Riki, and her 13-year-old brother, Richie, were having their own struggles. After frantically trying to get the flames under control with a small fire extinguisher, they realized it was too much for them. They grabbed the family’s two dogs and ran out the front door.
By the time the North East, Pa., volunteer firefighters arrived an unforgiving wind had taken the blaze from the detached garage across a wooden fence to the house, engulfing the attic and second floor bedroom. Once the fire mixed with the gasoline stored in the garage, it became so hot it sucked water out of the next door neighbor’s above-ground pool and melted parts of it.
The firefighters saved what they could, but in the end, the Turris lost their garage, kitchen, two bedrooms, laundry room and attic. The cause of the fire was electrical.
“I don’t remember a lot from that day, but I can tell you that the community was there for us from the beginning,” says Jodie. The morning after the fire, Carl Good of Advanced Drying and Restorations, fleet, and staff were ready to work, and guide her through the process of restoring her home.
Everyone was there for me, Carl Good was the biggest help of all,” says Jodie. “the restoration contractor who would rebuild our house as well as arrange for a cleaning that would eventually clean and return 7,589 of our personal items, including restoring my husband’s prized baseball card collection.”
“Firefighters salvaged my wedding rings, wedding album, and my Erie Insurance 20-year service anniversary ring,” says Jodie. “Carl was able to restore them and bring them back to life. I truly believe I have found a friend for life.”
Renovations on the Turri house are scheduled to be complete the week before Christmas. “Carl promised me that Santa will come down my chimney this year, and I believe him.”
Jodie was in fact in her home for Christmas. Advanced Drying and Restoration was there to bring her and her family a Christmas tree and wish them a happy holiday. It was a truly touching and rewarding experience for us all. It takes you a step back from your own life and really appreciate what you have.
